Never in my life have I thought that I'd actually be writing about a KDrama but I will try my best to make you understand why.
The last time I went gaga over a korean drama - WAIT not korean, but taiwanese, was during "Meteor Garden" days. DAO MING SEEEEEEE. Really, I mean who didn't, right? I can even remember printing the lyrics of the OST's just so I could sing along. (OMG, teen hormones?)
Nowadays, more people are getting into it, including celebs.
Can we just take time to appreciate how cute Anne Curtis is, fan girl-ing over Gong Yoo?
All of these Oppas are our boyfriends. Yeah? |
Ok, so mine started during the Legends of the Blue Sea hype. I've been seeing posts about it on my Facebook timeline whilst I'm sitting my ass off waiting for Game of Thrones and American Horror Story. Also, my friends recommended that I should give it a try since they said it's really nice. Out of curiosity, during one lazy day, I watched one episode. Just one ep I said, just a peek I said.
Lee Min Ho as Joon-Jae and Ji-Hyun as Shim Chung of LOTBS |
And OMG, boy am I hooked. At first I found it odd since it's all fantasy [though hey, we mermaids exists] but WHY. CAN'T. I. STOP. WATCHING !!!! The rest, is history.
Right after LOTBS comes my love for Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo. This one, is nothing but feel good and kilig. I swear to God, I fell in love with Joon-Hyung and Bok-Joo's love story to the point that I dream of stealing Joon-Hyung and wish I'd wake up to his face and not Tine's [Not kidding!]
Lee Sung-Kyung as Bok-Joo and Nam Joo-Hyuk as Joon-Hyung <3 |
It is the perfect stress reliever, even my boyfriend was hooked [I swear to God he bugs me every chance he gets to watch] Also, just months ago, it has been confirmed that those two^ are now dating IRL. You have no idea how my NamLee heart exploded <3
But you see, for someone as busy as me who would do nothing but bum and sleep during rest days, binge watching wasn't an option. [My eyes are too tired] It took me MONTHS to finish the whole thing so you can't really say I am nilamon ng kdrama yet... RIGHT? RIGHT? Right.
Next thing I know, friends have been messaging me asking me to watch Goblin since it is tagged as the 2nd highest rated kdrama in cable television almost surpassing the record holder. That's when the question popped up: WHAT'S THE HIGHEST RATED KDRAMA THEN? I knew I needed to watch it first.
Here we go, my giddy heart.
Upon research, I found out it is Reply 1988 [Answer Me 1988]. Set in the 80's, 1988 specifically as the title suggest, the story revolves around the group of childhood friends in the neighborhood of Ssangmundong [Awww.. just writing Ssangmundong makes me sad, I miss them so much.:( ARTE!!!] and their families. It is the 3rd of Reply TV series that goes back and forth between their past and current lives.
My squad, my people, my tribe
Deok-Sun - clumsy, naive, pretty and bully proof... not. :p |
Choi-Taek - smart, gentle and full of surprises |
Jung-Hwan - hard on the outside, soft on the inside. |
Sun-Woo - kind, too kind! Very family oriented. |
Dong-Ryong - He's your typical YOLO. Goes with the flow. |
The Siblings
Bo Ra [Deok-Sun's big sister] - A mixture of smart and feisty. |
Jung-Bong [Jung-Hwan's big brother] - Adorably weird! |
Jin Joo!!! <3 [Sun-Woo's baby sis] - Isn't she SOOO cute?! |
The Parentals
From Top, L-R: Jung-Hwan's, Deok-Sun's, Sun-Woo's mom and Taek's dad |
^These eommas and appas ARE FREAKIN' HILARIOUS!!!
In this particular Reply series, 50-year old Deok Sun, the lead girl character, is being interviewed about her childhood, and that's where all the episodes are based from. She appears in between episodes telling stories along with her husband, who is the biggest mystery of the series. WHO IS HE AMONGST THE SQUAD? Trust me, I had my guesses, I had my share of "I'm pretty sure it's him, final answer" moments only to be dismayed on the next episode because the new clues say otherwise. And you know what, Deok-Sun might actually be the one who started the enigma of "friendzone" :)
PLEASE. PROMISE ME. Don't google who Deok Sun-ah's mystery husband is, please. Watch it on it's own flow and don't spoil yourself, okay? Yeah? Okay. *pinky swear*
TALAGA BA? Yang bangs mo hokage e! |
But I guess what really made me fall in love with this is the fact that it isn't your typical story of love between two people. It is a story of love between people. It tackles normal family and individual issues, and shows how they cope up in their most extraordinary ways. It talks about how strong friendship can be. That your youth days, looking back, might be silly but it doesn't make it any less exceptional. [Get ready for nostalgia-filled episodes walking down on your PBB Teens Days. lol] The conflicts are not too heavy for the heart but is enough to make it melt in a good way. I remember crying multiple times to some episodes mostly because I was so touched. Here, you will understand how little things are actually the big things. And lastly, it also has a teaspoon of hilariousness from time to time.
Siya talaga yung peg ko sa hair ko but ending ko Dora. |
I hope you give this KDrama a chance. I don't know what else I could say to convince you to. All I can say, and all that there is are my words telling you how much this captured my entire being. I remember there's this one episode that made me want to see my mom right away after. I still have the lines that made me tear up to the bones in my head:
"Mothers tend to be the one you miss the most, whether they are alive or dead." - Deok Sun's dad
“They say that God created mothers because He can’t be everywhere at once. Even when one is at the age to be a mom, one’s mother is always one’s guardian and even saying the word “mom” is something that has the power to tug one’s heartstrings. Mothers are always strong.” - Bo Ra
Huhu. Those are just samples. There are too many lessons this show has to offer.
Remember, this isn't #1 for no reason. I mean think about it: you loved Goblin and they're par on the same level. I haven't seen Goblin because I find it hard to watch another KDrama after this! But I'd love to try.... just don't know when. Matagal akong mag-move on lol. It justified the fact of it being number one, and I don't think there's any other KDrama that could top my love for this series. This will always be my favorite.
“I was at the age when I no longer believed in Santa or felt my heart flutter because of Secret Santa. I was at an age when a present that was secretly left behind or secretly conveyed gentleness wasn’t enough to fulfill my expectations. Excitement would probably escape up to the back of my throat and choke me if I were to try to suppress it. Embarrassment that would probably make my heart explode if I were to admit to it. I was dying to make it obvious, but didn’t want to get caught. That was the excitement we felt back in 1988. We were 18 years old back then.” - Deok Sun, Reply 1988
x M
P.S. - Bo Gum IS MINE.
